Roger Dery, Precision Faceter

Roger Dery is founder and president of Spectral Gems, Inc., a supplier of quality custom-cut gemstones to the jewelry industry since 1981. As a gem cutter, he specializes in enhancing the performance and look of the classics.

Recognizing jewelers' needs for custom-cut stones, Roger began his gem cutting with a desire to preserve the art and science of faceting. Inspired by renowned faceters, Roger honed his skills and craft. He has been fortunate to gain expertise in this intricate artistry to maintain its integrity and appeal.

Marketing

In addition to faceting, Mr. Dery created and published several industry related reference tools: the ColorGrid© a color reference system, has been used by retailers to assist with the communication of color between buyers and sellers. He has also developed The Gemstone Characteristics and Durability Guide©, a gem reference chart, is used to help jewelry personnel avoid common errors when handling or working with colored stones. His GemInfo© cards, a series of consumer-oriented gemstone photo-postcards, allow jewelers and consumers to distinguish the different characteristics of a variety of gemstones. His Who Wants to be a Diamondaire program is a fun, group-interactive event devised to enhance the skills of retailers and their employees in delivering diamond presentations.

Education

Actively participating with jewelry industry boards, Roger has worked to enrich retail jewelers' awareness of gems, along with educating gemology and jewelry students throughout the Midwest. He was instrumental in solidifying the long-term use of the Gemology Institute of America's one-week core gemology courses for the Michigan Jewelers Association, a program he brought to the state in 1998.

Roger's distinguished accomplishments include serving on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Jewelers Association for nine years, where he is currently serving as Board President.

International

Roger's practiced skills with calibrated formulas create intricate facets. His aim is to maintain the highest standards in the field of gem cutting. A substantial contribution to his expertise has been extensive travel to hunt for rough gems around the world. This has taken him to Southeast Asia, Africa, India and Sri Lanka.

Gemstone Roundtables

His precision cutting and accuracy are exemplary, represented in a range of beautiful natural colored gems including: sapphire, garnet, aquamarine, zircon, tourmaline, citrine, kunzite, scapolite, amethyst, spinel, peridot and alexandrite among other rare and unusual gem species.

After gaining significant expertise in gems and gem cutting, Roger and his wife have worked with other professionals to develop a method for the consumer to experience some of the ‘thrill of the hunt’. This is referred to as a “Roundtable” event. As a small group setting, the Roundtable allows for a more meaningful and intimate manner to view and appreciate colored gems and their value. The Roundtable gives Roger the opportunity to share aspects, history and lore of the gems along with a personal dialogue with clients.

Roger’s work is represented at jewelry galleries, studios and retailers throughout the United States.
